Today, Follow Bill Healey and survey team, we will come to Chi Linh Star Golf & Country Club; one of first golf courses in the north of Vietnam.
Despite the rain in Hanoi and through most of our drive to Chi Linh, we were able to reach at our appointed time, happy that we arrived to much drier weather. The club staff ensured we were efficiently processed upon arrival, getting our clubs to the carts and ready to play. We were able to grab a quick breakfast before heading out to our golf carts and the course.
Chi Linh Star is a 27-hole facility, featuring three nines labeled the Hill, Lake and Valley courses.Designed and constructed by Australia-based Independent Golf Course Services, the course utilizes the natural features of the land, traversing through a scenic valley, through forested hills, and over several natural creeks and lakes.
The courses are set on a large natural lake which ensures water comes into play on many of the holes. Several holes feature tee-shots with water carries and others that play to island greens. With quite a lot of water hazards and bunkers on the course, it requires the player to think strategically about what club to be swinging. My caddy helped me quite often with club selection and where I should be playing to.
A few of the holes are quite memorable. One of Chi LInh’s best holes is the par 4, 373-yard second hole on the Valley Course. To par this hole, it requires a long carry to an elevated, well guarded green.
Also on the Valley Course is the par 5, 558-yard fifth hole which features an angled, side-hill lie all the way down the right side of the fairway. To make things more difficult, the large lake featured throughout the course is down the left side. Accuracy is rewarded on this hole.
A difficult finishing hole is the up-hill par 5, 632-yard ninth hole on the Lake Course. For many, this is their second nine, making this lengthy up-hill hole their finishing hole for 18. It was our final hole as well, giving us our final test as we made our way up to the clubhouse.
We noted the greens are large, fast-running, in very good condition, and certainly well protected by strategically placed bunkers. Elevation changes, along with the large lake and rolling hills create a memorable golf experience that provided a challenge for each of us.
After the round, we were joined by the club’s manager for a lunch and a further discussion about the condition of the course. As the clubhouse sits on the top of a hill, we were able to enjoy a very nice panoramic view over the golf course. .
